2017 Hospice Regatta
The Mudheads offer condolences to the Thomas O’Connell family (Beneteau First 36.7, Finale).
Kathryn O’Connell’s funeral will take place at St Mary Church in Stonington at 11:00am, Thursday June 15th, followed by a reception at Stonington Yacht Club at 12:30. Burial will be private at St Michael’s Cemetery in Waverley.

Michael Cavanaugh
A celebration of Michael Cavanaugh’s life will be held on June 18, from 3-6pm at Mystic Shipyard, 100 Essex Street, Mystic, CT.
Michael Dean Cavanaugh September 27, 1961 – April 26, 2017 Michael passed away peacefully April 26, 2017 with his beloved wife Linda Waterman Cavanaugh by his side, along with family and friends, after a 6 year battle with ALS. Mike and Linda lived these years to the fullest with dignity and grace. Michael was born in Denver, CO. and was the eldest son of Michael and Rosemary Cavanaugh of Oakland, CA. He was a graduate of A&M University College Station, TX with degrees in Nuclear Engineering and Language Arts. He was fluent in 3 languages and worked as a Nuclear Engineer in Texas and Connecticut. He married the love of his life, Linda Waterman Cavanaugh on October 10, 2010 and lived the remainder of his days with her. He is survived by many members of the Cavanaugh, Waterman, Potter, Pfisterer, Aranda and Nevarez families. He was very active in the Mystic/Stonington community and was known and loved by many. He worked at Millstone, Pfizer and his own company, MDC Machine Design where he designed and built countless machines. Design was one of his many passions, he was also an avid sailor and cyclist. He was co-founder and Past Commodore of Mystic River Yacht Club and involved with Mason Island Yacht Club Shields Race Committee, Mystic River Mudhead Sailing Association Commodore, Off Soundings and involved with various charity regattas. He loved sailing and racing and he has a special place in his heart for his “Slippahs”, all that sailed with him on the Crystal Slipper. Michael was passionate about life, new experiences and the people around him. He truly lived life to the fullest and did not fear new experiences. He was a creative genius, problem solver, a writer, a great storyteller, an artist, devoted husband, son, brother and uncle. There are so many groups of friends that include all these life experiences, too many to name, he loved you all and if you got a nickname from him, you are extra special. We will all miss that laugh, that smile, that twinkle in your eyes. May God keep you and protect you. Visitation will be held at the Mystic Funeral Home, Route 1 (51 Williams Ave) Mystic, on Tuesday, May 2, 2017 from 5:00-8:00 P.M. Dexter Alden Holaday (72) a lifelong resident of Noank, CT passed away on April 10, 2017.
Mr. Holaday was a nationally and internationally known marine yacht surveyor. He attended local schools and graduated from R. E. Fitch High School in 1963. He was a submarine qualified U. S. Navy veteran serving aboard the USS TUSK and the USS ANGLER during the Cold War. He attended The University of Connecticut, The University of Rhode Island, Mitchell College, Middlesex College, Suffolk University Law School, Three Rivers College and The Westlawn School of Yacht Design. He was also awarded a Masters Degree in Marine Surveying from the State of Connecticut and held a U. S. Coast Guard license for over forty years. Additionally, he spent many years as a service/yard manager at several local marinas.
Mr. Holaday was born February 6, 1945 to the late William Dexter Holaday and Dorothy E. Adams Holaday. He married Maryanne E. Ricciotti on May 3, 1969. He enjoyed sailing, golf, jazz, civil war history and genealogy. He traveled with his wife Maryanne to England many times researching his family lineage, where they made many friends.
He was a member of The National Association of Marine Surveyors, a charter Member of The Society of Accredited Marine Surveyors, The Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers, U. S. Submarine Veterans, Noank Historical Society, Connecticut Society of Genealogists, The New England Historical and Genealogy Society, Life Member of the Noank Fire Co. and a member of several local Yacht Clubs.
Mr. Holaday is survived by Maryanne, his wife of 48 years, a son Dexter A. Holaday II and his wife June of North Kingstown, RI, and a daughter Allison Ann Holaday of Maynard, MA and her husband Ted Rice. Dexter A. Holaday II will be continuing his father’s marine surveying business, founded in 1971.
A funeral service will be held at the Christ United Methodist Church, 200 Hazelnut Hill Road, Groton, CT on Tuesday, April 18th at 11:00 AM. Burial will follow at the Noank Valley Cemetery on Route 215. Immediately after the burial, a reception will follow. His family will receive friends Monday, from 5-8 pm at the Mystic Funeral Home located on Route 1 in Mystic.

Mystic – Rules Guru Dave Perry gave local racers a jump start on the new Racing Rules of Sailing 2017-2020 on Wednesday, November 16. The Mudheads Fall Seminar, co-sponsored by Off Soundings Club, drew nearly 100 sailors to the Mystic Yachting Center in West Mystic. Rules were discussed, beer and wine was served and the crowd left looking for their rule books from US Sailing. “You won’t notice a big difference in Part Two rules,” Dave says, “but there are some small changes that need to be learned.”

Winners of The Stu Silvestri Award for Best Race Management and The Richard H. Roberts Trophy for Best Circuit Party
About the awards:
The Stu Silvestri trophy is awarded to the ECSA member club who shows the best race management. Stu was a member of Thames Yacht Club and proper race management was her passion. As the secretary of ECSA she worked to promote fair sailing in this area. She was also an engineer at Electric Boat and raced her Ranger 26 “Jester” with her family. Her daughters followed her path and scored very well in the Blue Jay Nationals. Her son, Stewart, competed in multiple America’s Cup campaigns.
The Richard H. Roberts trophy is awarded to the ECSA member club that hosts the best after race party of the circuit. This is decided by a vote of ECSA members. Richard H. “Dick” Roberts was a key fixture of Connecticut sailing. He graduated from the Naval Academy, and was an engineer at Electric Boat. A member of Thames Yacht Club and the Off Soundings Club, he held many offices in both. As secretary of ECSA he worked tirelessly to refine and govern this sport, helping all clubs with writing Sailing Instructions and hosting Race Management seminars.

Mudheads Competing in International Women’s Keelboat Championship

The International Women’s Keelboat Championship came to an end today and our team came in 11th place. We sailed a great regatta and had a lot of fun. Unfortunately, there were two run ins with “the law” at two separate leeward mark rounding that resulted in large point additions to our score thus pushing us back a lot further in the standings than our sailing on the water reflects. Overall, there was a lot of tight and fun racing on the water that took place over the past week and we are so thankful for all the support the Mystic River Mudhead Sailing Association provided us.

Littlefield & Crew bring home 4th from the Hospice Regatta National Championship
Prescott Littlefield led a team of Mudhead sailors in the 2016 Hospice Regatta National Championship, in Galveston, TX. His crew included: Matthew Littlefield, Claudia Koerting, Liz Sistare and Matt Wilson. Littlefield’s team raced beautifully in the first few races in their group’s nine race qualifying series earning 5 bullets on and finished forth over all .
“It was a real honor to represent the Mudheads at this year’s National Hospice Regattas Championship. Getting to know sailors from other parts of the country who are actively supporting Hospice care was a highlight of the event.” said Littlefield.
The Hospice Regattas National Championship was the first U.S. charity sailing championship to promote local regattas efforts to support hospice programs. The event offers three days of sailboat racing for one winning skipper and crew from each local hospice regatta that has completed at least two regattas. “Some on the water memorable moments were having a fish jump out of the water and briefly land on the bow of our Sonar during a race, as well as, losing our spinnaker halyard up the mast despite having taped the shackle, only losing one position on that downwind leg, and then climbing the mast after finishing to retrieve it to the cheers of the Sea Scout Base Galveston support staff and Race Committee,” said Littlefield.
The National Hospice Regatta Alliance is a (c)(3) association of hospice regattas that independently raise money and awareness for hospices in their communities. It supports a rapidly expanding nationwide network of regattas that publicize hospice care. NHRA is an all-volunteer organization helping hospice regattas grow and learn from each other, and promoting hospice care nationally. Since the first Hospice Regatta in 1982, more than 20,000 sailors, sponsors and volunteers have raised over $12 million to provide hospice care to terminal patients and their families without regard for ability to pay.
Locally, the Mudheads work with Center for Hospice Care – a community based, nonprofit organization serving Eastern Connecticut since 1985. Southeastern Connecticut sailor Prescott Littlefield will lead a team of Mystic River Mudhead Sailing Association sailors in the Hospice Regattas National Championship, which will be held April 28 – May 1 in Galveston, TX. Littlefield’s crew includes Claudia Koerting, Matt Wilson, Liz Sistare and Matthew Littlefield.
Littlefield has raced his J/29 Zig Zag Zoom in the Mudhead Donzo Wednesday Night Race Series and countless other Eastern Connecticut Sailing Association regattas for the past decade. He has also been an active frostbite racer in Essex (Frostbite YC) for over 20 years in a JY-15, and more recently, in a Laser. He is the Waterfront Programs Manager at the University of Connecticut Avery Point campus and a sailing coach for the Avery Point Sailing Club and The Williams School Varsity Sailing Team.
The regatta venue, Sea Scout Base Galveston, offers reliably outstanding sailing conditions and a racecourse that’s “steps away in the front yard.” Competitors will race Sonars in a round-robin series that will maximize time on the water for all teams.

Mudheads receive Club Race Officer and Regional Race Officer Qualifications
Over the weekend of March 14-15, four Mudheads set off for Newport to participate in the US Sailing Club Race Officer and Advanced Race Officer Courses hosted by the New York Yacht Club. Robert Austin-Lafrance, Greg Gilmartin, Frank Murphy and Anne Wilkinson all completed the training and testing requirements for Race Officers and successfully passed.
US Sailing recognizes the need for strong race committee members certified in safety and proper management for sailboat races. US Sailing was originally organized as the North American Yacht Racing Union (NAYRU) in 1897. The organization’s original purpose was to encourage and promote yacht racing, and to unify the racing and rating rules in the United States and Canada and throughout the yachting world.
The Mudhead Race Committee has been honored in receiving multiple nods for best run races over the last forty years. The professional dedication used on the race course enables racers to enjoy and compete safely every Wednesday night from May-September in the Donzo Wednesday Night Racing Series. Additionally, the Mudheads run the Benefit Regatta for Center for Hospice Care, this year’s event is July 16; and you can see the Mudheads throughout the Sound, involved, to varying degrees, with many Eastern Connecticut Sailing Association member club regattas.

Robert Millett Wilkinson
Stonington – Robert Millett Wilkinson, 86, of Mystic and formerly of Noank, died Wednesday, Jan. 27, 2016, from complications of pneumonia.
Bob was the husband of 64 years to Jeanne (Phillips) Wilkinson and is also survived by his daughter, Sheryl and son-in-law, Tom Clukey, of New Gloucester, Maine; son, Alan Wilkinson; daughter-in-law, Anne Wilkinson of Noank; and his two grandchildren, Benjamin and Sarah Wilkinson of Noank.
He was predeceased by his son, Donald “Donzo” Wilkinson.

Vice Commodore Dan Lettiere, Rodney Johnstone and Commodore Mike LaChance celebrate the 40th birthday of the J/24. Johnstone’s seminar highlighted the history of J-Boats and was attended by over 120 Mudheads and Mudhead friends. Thank you to all who attended and contributed food items for the Pawcatuck Neighborhood Center. And special thanks to Rodney Johnstone, Jeff Marshall, Mystic Shipyard, Ocean Blue Catering and Cask N Keg.
120 Mudheads and friends turned out at Mystic Shipyard recently to hear Rod Johnstone tell the story of J Boats. From his Stonington garage, Rod designed and built the venerable J-24 nearly 40 years ago. Thousands of boats and dozens of designs later, Rod and his family continue to sail to success. Here is the story in Rod’s own words.
Mudhead Awards Overview
It was an evening of ducks, chickens, yetis, judges, lawyers and prison guards… plus several good natured ‘prisoners’ in the jail cell. While there were many excellent candidates to choose from, the Mudcup ultimately went to Carl Fast… along with Carl stood Bill Canning who good-naturedly admitted his wrong doing- but not on the race course! Who would have thought that two of the best sailors would be in the running? A big thank you to Tom Brady who also made an appearance in ‘court’.
A wonderful evening was had by all. Congratulations to all of the winners and see you next year! Special thanks to Mason’s Island Yacht Club, East Coast Catering and Cask N Keg.

Local Sailors to Compete in Hospice Regattas National Championship in Rochester, NY
Southeastern Connecticut sailor, Bill Mortensen, of Pawcatuck, CT, is going to lead a team of Mudhead sailors in the Hospice Regattas National Championship, which will be held June 12-14, 2015 in the waters of Lake Ontario, hosted by Rochester Yacht Club (RYC). Mortensen is a past commodore of the Mudheads and has won multiple times in the Mudhead Benefit Cup for Center for Hospice Care. His crew includes: Mark Cika, John Sicuranza and Ty Whitman.
RYC conducted the Alliance’s annual Championship regatta in 2009-2011, with racing on Lake Ontario for teams representing hospice regattas around the U.S. and Canada. The competitors will race on Sonar sailboats in a round-robin series that will maximize time on the water for all teams over the three-day competition. The Sonar, a 23-ft. one-design keelboat, races competitively with a skipper and three crew.
“The Alliance is very pleased that our friends at RYC have offered to host our Championship again next year,” National Hospice Regatta Alliance president Jean S. Klutz said. “Our three years there demonstrated that Rochester is an outstanding venue for racing and for hospitality, and we’re delighted to return,” she added.
Greg Gilmartin, a member of the 2009 Mudhead team said, “Rochester Yacht Club is a top-notch facility, and RYC organizes wonderful races. Rochester Yacht Club was incorporated in 1877, the Rochester Yacht Club celebrated its 125th anniversary in 2002 and is still going strong. The club’s first regatta was held in 1877 with eight sail boats competing, and it hosted 104 boats at the J/22 World Championship in August 2008. RYC also hosts Rochester’s local Hospice Regatta in odd-numbered years. The club’s purpose is to provide and encourage interests and instruction in areas of yachts and yachting, seamanship, racing and traditions of yachting. By car, RYC is seven miles from the heart of Rochester, Monroe County, New York, and it is located on the south shore of Lake Ontario and accessible from the Genesee River.

set on the shores of Fort Adams State Park, Newport, overlooking the East Passage. 40 Mudheads by bus, dozens more by car, took in the Volvo Ocean Race Stopover In Port Race on May 16, 2015. Irish Flavored Mudheads
For just one brief, shining moment, it seemed that thousands had lined the streets of Mystic to cheer the Mudheads. That’s what happens when you drag a J-24 through downtown as part of the 12th Annual Mystic Irish Parade. Sails Up 4 Cancer and the Mystic Blues Festival band joined in the fun and here’s what it looked like.
